Why is it whenever my son gets a cold or an ear infection he start to spit up more? - back of ear infection more condition_symptoms

This is usually the biggest sign that has an ear infection, and pulls the ear. He spits with an infection in the sign of something more? Or is it normal? Anyone who has experience in this area?
